Plastic waste is getting a lot of attention at the moment, because us humans are making so goddarn much of it. It’s clogging up rivers and oceans, it’s killing sealife and it’s just generally ruining a whole bunch of things at an alarming rate. Like, the planet we live on. Which is kind of a big deal.
A Few facts on ocean plastic:
- There is an island made of trash twice the size of Texas floating on the Pacific Ocean; the North Pacific Gyre. There, the number of floating plastic pieces outnumbers total marine life in the immediate vicinity six to one.
- 300,000 dolphins and porpoises die each year as a result of becoming entangled in discarded plastic fishing nets and other ocean waste, and more than 1,000,000 seabirds die consuming plastic items like bottle caps, straws and carrier bags.
- Half of the 300 million tons of plastic produced each year is used only once.
